We already know that you don’t have to be armed to get shot by the police. You could be on the floor, with arms raised, dictating calmly your actions and intentions with a patient, and still get shot.

This was the case for Charles Kinsey, a behavioral therapist who was shot after attempting to recover an autistic patient back to a group home. CNN reports that Charles was trying to calm his patient down during the exchange with officers, who claimed they received a call about a threatening individual with a gun. His patient, of course, only had a toy truck. Officers are calling the shooting an accident, saying they meant to shoot the autistic patient instead (as if that’s any better).

To make matters worse, after being shot, Charles was arrested and laid bleeding for 20 minutes before receiving medical attention.
