Born Again Virgin has been making a bold statement about interracial dating lately.
Even in 2016, interracial dating still seems to live in the “taboo” category. Why is that? Is it just a matter of personal preference that people date within their own race or is there a larger, more complex issue?
In Episode 18, Kelly is set up on a blind date by her sister to meet “Raj”. Shocked to find that Raj is Indian, Kelly is hesitant to continue dating him, although she finds him attractive and is impressed with his credentials (he’s a Pediatric Heart Surgeon). By episode 19, we see a shift in Kelly’s attitude about dating Raj as she allows him to court her and even has dinner with his family.
According to a recent study, among people of color, black women are the least likely (only 12%) to marry outside of their race, which is half as likely as black men. Are black women too headstrong about dating within their race? Whatever challenges that may come with interracial dating, one thing is for certain: You get to explore a new relationship with someone who can teach you about a new culture.
