HISTORY MAKERS: HOTTEST GRAMMY AWARD PERFORMANCES

    February 10, 2012

    Lauryn Hill
This weekend marks the first edition of the Adele Awards (otherwise known as the 2012 Grammys) and with a list of performers that include Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Coldplay, Adele and Paul McCartney, I can’t help but think: I miss Whitney Houston.

Here’s a look back at some of my all-time favorite Grammy performances over the years. I was barely alive for some of them, but I get the idea that with the way the music industry is going future performers will have me wishing I were dead so I best cherish the memories.

    Dig into my favorites:

These days Lauryn Hill acts too good to sing her songs the way we liked them, and that’s a shame, too, because when L-Boogie was on she was magical. Cough drops and comeback wishes to you, Ms. Hill.

No shade to the dead around these parts. All I have to say is: I miss you much, Amy Winehouse.

Saving All My Love For You” earned Whitney Houston her first Grammy, Emmy, and an eternal spot on my shower singing playlist. Gon’ girl.

I love this joint performance from Prince and Beyoncé so much. Now hurry up and enjoy it before the Purple Prince of link snatching shuts this clip down.

I love Mary J. Blige’s performance of “No More Drama” at the 44th annual Grammy Awards in 2002 if for no other reason than she sang this song like it depending on her making rent.

It’s 10 minutes of Michael Jackson in his prime. Need I say more?

Ladies and gentleman, I present Janet Jackson. For all of you folks who go on and on about lip syncing, sometimes that’s – gasp – okay so long as your pop is on point.

If you’ve got hate in your heart for Madonna, I want no parts of you. Let her do her yoga routine on stage in peace. ‘

When the Rap Rat Pack and a near water-breaking pregnant woman collide.

While technically not one of my favorite performances, I feel like Aretha Franklin would slap some of the sarcasm out of me if I didn’t acknowledge the Queen of Soul in some capacity.

    Honorable mention:

It’s a blink and you miss it performance, but I do miss this version of Toni Braxton an awful lot.

This Christina Aguilera cover of Nina Simone’s version of “I Loves You, Porgy” was actually performed at the Grammy Awards’ cousin, the Grammy Awards nomination special. Nevertheless, it’s one of X-Tina’s finest performances ever – a reminder of how beautiful her voice can sound when she’s not using to howl like an angry banshee.

Now that I’ve shared my favorites, it’s time to tell us some of yours. Gon’ now.
