The 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards – Pre-GRAMMY Gala And Salute To Industry Icons Honoring L.A. Reid – Arrivals

For a good while now, despite winning an Academy Award and Grammy, lately Jennifer Hudson has been more so known for her weight loss than her talent. Her last album didn’t perform particularly well, plus one of her recent film projects, Winnie, failed to get a theatrical release in the U.S. Clive Davis seems to be working to make sure Jennifer’s talent is put back into the forefront — at least her music-related talents anyway.

Speaking with Billboard, the legendary record exec says he’s hard at work on finding her the right sound for her new album:

I’m looking for material for Jennifer Hudson. I believe in Jennifer; it’s her third album. She just came from a movie with Ne-Yo. And I’ll be meeting with our great songwriters in that time honored tradition because she is an enormous talent. And we’re looking to find more signature songs for her.

Granted, I am not the biggest fan of J. Hud’s music, but I do adore “No One Gonna Love You.” In that song she is shouting at me like a singing alarm clock and it’s a nice soulful track that works for her — which is more than I can say for some of those bland throwback ballads for the 1990s. Sometimes it’s harder to find the right songs for artists with big voices because there’s this notion that have to be a balladeer.

However, have Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey taught us nothing?

Speak your peace: What kind of sound do you want to hear from Jennifer Hudson on her third album?
