Alabama A&M University is a comprehensive land-grant institution. It was founded in 1875 by William Cooper Councill, a former slave. AAMU operates as a teaching, research and public-service institution. Through their five colleges, AAMU offers 51 majors in departments such as art and film, elementary/early childhood education, civil and electrical engineering, business and much more. Students can become more involved on campus through the many registered student groups and organizations. Among those include popular African-American fraternities and sororities, such as Delta Sigma Theta, Alpha Kappa Alpha and Omega Psi Phi. Other group organizations include those with interest in religion, politics, performing arts and public service. AAMU’s mission is to provide excellence in education and a scholarly environment in which inquiring and discriminating minds may be nourished.
